Porcelain Birds: Ru Kuwahata & Max Porter’s new feature film

The American/Japanese duo directors duo is back at Ciclic Animation for the development of its new puppet project Porcelain Birds.

From cartoons to hand puppet animation to pixilation, Ru Kuwahata and Max Porter like to combine different animation techniques. Making animated films for more than a decade, they have received several festival awards such as the Special Mention in the Children’s Film Competition at the Berkeley Glas Animation Festival for their film Perfect Houseguest. And the success of Negative Space Multi-award winner in festivals including an Oscar nomination and Annie Awards 2018.

In 2008, this young couple founded Tiny Inventions, an animation studio where they make music videos, pubs and 5 independent films including Something Left, Something Taken which makes them known in the small world of animation (Grand Jury Prize for Best Animated Short at the Nashville Film Festival in 2011).

This film, produced by Miyu Production, received development support. The directors, Ru Kuwahata & Max Porter, will be in residence from December 17th, 2021 to February 11th, 2022.

Kayo, a Japanese high school student, arrives in California as part of a new school exchange program funded by an American billionaire. She learns how to integrate into this confusing new culture, and discovers a magical property adjacent to the campus where lives a talking ostrich. But soon the billionaire who owns the ranch is subject to disturbing accusations, and Kayo discovers the dark side of the American dream.
